SD-WAN for Retail: Operational Continuity and Secure In-Store Payments Nationwide

The client is a renowned footwear and fashion retail chain with an established footprint in the Peruvian market. Its commercial footprint spans broad nationwide coverage through dozens of points of sale strategically distributed across shopping malls and high-traffic standalone street locations.

To sustain this customer volume, ensuring zero downtime across point-of-sale (POS) registers and real-time inventory synchronization is critical to the business’s bottom line.

THE CHALLENGE

Prior to partnering with Convergia, branch locations operated on traditional dedicated links with limited bandwidth capacity.

This legacy infrastructure fell short of modern retail demands due to a lack of automated redundancy and integrated perimeter security frameworks. Whenever a local carrier outage occurred, POS payment processing and electronic invoicing went offline, triggering checkout bottlenecks and lost sales opportunities during peak shopping hours.

To support its retail expansion roadmap and cloud platform adoption, the IT department set out to transition toward an agile, resilient, and scalable architecture—all while keeping recurring monthly operational expenditures under control.

The technology team defined three strategic priorities:

  • Operational continuity and high availability: Guarantee continuous store uptime so card payments and electronic invoicing process seamlessly during primary carrier disruptions.
  • Governance and advanced perimeter security: Strengthen corporate network protection through centralized web filtering policies, application control, and threat mitigation at each store location.
  • Scalability and expanded link capacity: Substantially increase available bandwidth to support cloud-hosted platforms, ERP systems, and real-time inventory synchronization without network congestion.

THE SOLUTION

Convergia engineered and deployed an end-to-end Managed SD-WAN architecture, streamlining operations by acting as a single technology partner and orchestrating multiple carriers under one centrally monitored platform.

The deployment integrated the following core components:

  1. Cost-optimized high-speed connectivity: Migration to high-performance broadband fiber optic links, multiplying throughput capacity per branch while remaining within the client’s existing budget parameters.
  1. Automated cellular failover with sub-second cutover: Rollout of industrial Teltonika routers equipped with multi-carrier mobile connectivity at every location. If fiber connectivity degrades, mission-critical sales traffic reroutes transparently with zero perceptible interruption.
  1. Perimeter security and threat management (Next-Generation Firewall): Integration of Fortinet appliances across each branch, enabling real-time deep traffic inspection, intelligent prioritization of transaction data, and secure network segmentation between POS checkouts and corporate systems.
  1. 24/7/365 proactive technical monitoring and support: Dedicated helpdesk backed by certified network engineers and round-the-clock link health monitoring to resolve potential issues before store operations are impacted.

OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY AND RESULTS

In its initial rollout phase, the retailer activated this solution across 30 strategic branch locations, increasing available bandwidth from 20 Mbps to 150 Mbps per site. The partnership with Convergia includes a service level agreement (SLA) guaranteeing 70% of contracted throughput capacity—all while matching the exact monthly spend previously allocated to legacy circuits.

Key business outcomes delivered by Convergia’s Connectivity Engineering team include:

  • Zero downtime at POS checkouts: Automated failover to cellular data safeguards payment processing. POS terminals and billing workflows run uninterrupted, ensuring smooth customer service and frictionless transactions.
  • Data protection and regulatory compliance: FortiGate firewalls shield sensitive cardholder data and enterprise traffic, aligning store operations with strict retail industry security standards.
  • Streamlined management and unified regional billing: Convergia centralized network monitoring, local carrier governance, and billing into a single point of contact, significantly lowering operational workload for internal IT staff.
